Gjeilo began playing piano, and gravitated towards jazz improvisation. From an early age he was exposed to a range of different genres of music, but he took a special liking to both jazz and classical choral music. Bruffy brought Gjeilo’s music to the Chorale and its audiences, and the response was immediate. Ola Gjeilo was born in 1978, in Sandvika, Norway. When he first heard Gjeilo’s Ubi caritas, Charles Bruffy was instantly hooked, finding the music ‘refreshing and magnetic’. In mid-April, 2011, composer Ola Gjeilo spent 3 days on.

Ubi Caritas (Ola Gjeilo) is sung by The CWU Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director). Nowadays it is the offertorium on Maundy Thursday ( Graduale Triplex, p.168). On this disc the Choir performs choral works and settings of sacred texts by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. Ubi Caritas Lyrics: Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est / Simul ergo cum in unum congregamur: / Ne nos mente dividamur, caveamus / Cessent iurgia maligna, cessent lites / Et in medio nostri sit Christus. Antiphon, Mode 6, in the Liber Usualis, p.

Before the liturgy reform of Vatican II, this was the eighth (and final) antiphon for the rite of the Washing of the Feet on Maundy Thursday (= Holy Thursday, the Thursday before Easter).
